Nas to Pay Kelis $55,000 a Month in Temporary Support 1

About: Entertainers

Nas and KelisBack in April, singer Kelis filed for divorce from her husband, rapper Nas. She was about seven months pregnant with the couple’s first child at the time. Then, last month, Kelis and her divorce attorney Laura Wasser asked the court to award temporary spousal support, temporary child support, medical expenses and a portion of the expense of outfitting a celebrity baby nursery.

Nas responded through his attorneys, advising the judge that he did not make as much money as Kelis advised and asking that the court deny the request for spousal support (also known as alimony). The court put the matter on hold until late July.

The scheduled hearing occurred today, one day after Kelis gave birth to a baby boy named Knight in New York City. Nas reportedly showed up at the hospital intoxicated after a concert and was present in a waiting room but not in the delivery room. Neither was present for the hearing.

The family court judge ultimately ordered Nas to pay Kelis $55,000 a month in combined spousal and child support as well as the mortgage on the couple’s Los Angeles home. He is also required to reimburse Kelis for the baby nurse, prenatal expenses and medical insurance. Finally, the court ordered Nas to pay $35,000 to Wasser. (Court orders requiring one side to pay the other’s attorneys’ fees are not uncommon, especially in situations where the earning capacity of the parties is substantially different.)

These figures are only temporary, valid only pending resolution of the divorce case. The support amount could go up or down, depending on the financial components of the case (income, expenses, etc.). And the case still has to resolve things such as division of marital property, establishment of permanent spousal support and child support and, often most importantly, child custody and visitation.
